Capital Winter Classic

Tournament Champions!

Championship Sunday!

Sunday brought with it the conclusion of a successful Capital Winter Classic. This particular event marked the 11th year that this tournament has occurred, this year featuring 65 teams competing across six different divisions, at three different facilities in Ottawa. The tournament featured many local competitors, as well as teams travelling from various cities across Ontario, Quebec, and the United States.

The round robin games, which took place on Friday and Saturday, offered no shortage of excitement, featuring many close games. When it came time to determine which teams would be moving on to the playoff rounds, it was apparent how close the tournament had been, as many teams finished within mere goals of each other.

On Sunday morning teams arrived at the Bell Sensplex, after spending Saturday night dreaming of taking home the tournament crown. Many teams started their journeys in the semifinals and played with great intensity in an effort to move on. The excitement witnessed on the two opening days of the tournament only increased on Sunday, as some games required overtime to determine a victor. By the time the sun had set on Championship Sunday, six different teams had emerged victorious. Please help us congratulate all the champions and finalists across the six divisions at the 11th Annual Capital Winter Classic.

Push For The Playoffs Begin at CWC

Faceoff Friday!

After much anticipation, weekend two of the 11th Annual Capital Winter Classic has begun.  Games began bright and early this morning and continued late into the evening, as teams from Ontario, Quebec, and the United States battled to win a valuable two points in the hopes of hoisting the holy grail on Sunday afternoon.

By the time that the final buzzer sounded on Faceoff Friday, each and every team had made their debut at the Showcase, with some teams already playing their second games. There were many closely contested games throughout the day. As each game passed the intensity would build, as no one wanted to back down. Spectators at rinks across Ottawa were treated to excellent hockey from start to finish. Most of the games were close or tied going into the third period.

There were several great performances throughout the day, which made picking player of the game awards that much more challenging.  These performances were highlighted by a brilliant 4 goal performance from Nicolas Corry (Gloucester Rangers-Peewee AA). In fact the scoring lead in each division is currently tied amongst several players.  The goaltending side proved to be much more challenging in highlighting the best as several goalies were nothing less than flawless for their respective clubs.  Following today's games, a total of 19 goalies posted shutouts.  Well done!

The action is only to ramp up tomorrow as the playoff push begins.  Many teams will strive for the right to move on to Championship Sunday. In the Minor Atom B/A, Minor Peewee AA & Major Peewee AA the top four teams will advance.  The top six will advance in the Major Atom B/A, Minor Peewee B/A & Major Peewee B/A divisions.
